Basic Gear – the items that you shouldn’t leave home without

  • Wetsuit or drysuit
  • Personal Floatation Device (PFD) – worn on your person *
  • Whistle – attached to your PFD
  • Booties- warm, protective foot ware
  • Spray skirt (unless on SOT or SUP)
  • VHF radio
  • Throw or Tow rope
  • First aid kit (personal)
  • Paddle float
  • Bilge pump
  • Water
  • Spare paddle
  • Sponge
  • Rescue Knife

Risk Management & Navigation Aids

  • Float plan (who knows where you are and when you will return)
  • Maps/charts
  • Tide/current tables for area
  • Marine weather forecast
  • Knowledge of paddling hand signals
  • Ability to do a ‘wet’ exit and ‘assisted’ rescue
  • Basic understanding of reading sea conditions
  • Realistic assessment of your skill level

  • Helmet (essential if paddling near rocks or doing surf launches and landings)
  • Visual signaling devices (hand held flares, smoke, flare gun, mirror, laser flare)
