Paddling

  • New Members -Getting Started

    • Before joining OPP on the water, we ask all members to demonstrate a few basic paddling and safety skills in a relaxed, supportive setting. This includes being able to use basic paddle strokes to move and steer your boat, do a wet exit, and take part in an assisted rescue—both as a swimmer and as a rescuer.
    • If you’re new to kayaking, don’t worry—you don’t have to learn everything on your own. We’re here to help, and our Mentor Team is happy to share tips, practice with you, and help you build confidence at your own pace. If you’d like support getting ready, contact anyone on our Mentor Team or our Safety Skills Coordinator who can guide you and connect you with experienced members.
    • To keep everyone safe and confident on the water, all members refresh these skills each year.
    • Before heading out for a paddle, we recommend you review the required gear list in the Participant Guide to make sure you’ve got all the essentials. It’s also worthwhile to check the recommended—though not required—gear list for a few helpful extras. Dress for cold water immersion and be ready for whatever the day decides to throw your way. Pack plenty of water, some snacks and/or lunch, and anything else that will help keep you comfy, happy, and enjoying your time on the water.
    • To sign up for paddles, check out the Event Calendar to see what's scheduled.  Registration isn't always required, but it is recommended as it allows the POC (Point of Contact) to keep you informed of changes to venues or cancellations.  Before joining a paddle, take a moment to read through the paddle description and make sure it feels like a comfortable fit for your current skill level and experience. We want you to feel confident and have a great time on the water! If you’re unsure, please reach out—we’re happy to help you think it through, but each paddler is ultimately responsible for deciding whether a trip is appropriate for them.
